Precise and advanced diagnosis of the pancreas, bile ducts, and digestive tract wall
When an in-depth look beyond the stomach wall is required - at the pancreas, bile ducts, or lymph nodes - standard tests do not always provide an answer.
EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound) is the most advanced technology combining endoscopy (camera) with a tiny ultrasound transducer at the tip of the device. This combination allows Dr. Vosko to press the transducer against the stomach wall and scan internal organs from zero distance, at a resolution that no external CT or MRI can achieve.
Dr. Vosko, an expert in advanced endoscopy and a graduate of Westmead Australia, performs diagnostic and therapeutic EUS examinations with high skill, including taking biopsies (FNA) from complex areas, saving patients unnecessary diagnostic surgeries.
Need an accurate diagnosis in the pancreas or bile ducts?
Dr. Vosko is an EUS expert.
Who is this exam for?
The test is intended for conditions requiring high-resolution imaging or tissue sampling from organs adjacent to the digestive system.
Key Indications:
- Pancreas: Diagnosis and characterization of pancreatic cysts, solid tumors, or chronic inflammation. This is the most accurate tool for early detection of pancreatic cancer.
- Bile Ducts: Detection of bile duct stones (Choledocholithiasis) invisible on CT or standard abdominal ultrasound.
- Esophageal/Stomach Tumors: Disease Staging – checking tumor penetration depth and lymph node involvement.
- Submucosal Masses: Diagnosis of lumps (such as GIST) located beneath the stomach lining.
- Treatment: Draining pancreatic cysts (Pseudocysts) or injecting pain-relieving agents into the nerve plexus (Celiac Plexus Neurolysis).
The great advantage of EUS is the proximity to the examined organ and the ability to physically sample it.
EUS is an examination that depends on the "Operating Hand" (Operator Dependent) more than any other test.
- International Experience: Dr. Vosko trained in Sydney (Australia) and has accumulated experience in thousands of EUS examinations. The ability to decipher complex ultrasound images requires years of skill.
- Biopsy Accuracy (FNA/FNB): Dr. Vosko uses new-generation needles that allow taking a tissue core (Core Biopsy) and not just single cells, dramatically increasing the chance of a correct diagnosis the first time.
- Technology Combination: In cases of bile duct stones, Dr. Vosko can perform EUS for diagnosis and immediately follow with ERCP for treatment in the same session (under one anesthesia).
How is the treatment carried out?
How is the consultation conducted?
- Insertion: A special endoscope with an ultrasound transducer at its tip is inserted through the mouth into the stomach and duodenum.
- Scanning: The doctor presses the transducer against the inner wall and scans adjacent organs (pancreas, liver, gallbladder).
- Biopsy (if necessary): If a suspicious lump is identified, a fine needle exits the device, passes through the stomach wall, and takes a sample from the lump under real-time ultrasound guidance. The action is not painful (internal).
How should I prepare for treatment?
How should I prepare for the consultation?
- Fasting: Full fasting for 6-8 hours before the test.
- Medications: Blood thinners (such as Clexane, Eliquis, Plavix) must be stopped several days in advance with medical consultation, especially if a biopsy is planned.
- Blood Tests: Please bring up-to-date blood count and coagulation function tests.
What to expect the day after? (Recovery and recuperation)
Recovery
- Observation: Rest for about an hour in recovery.
- Sensations: Mild sore throat may occur. If a pancreatic biopsy was performed, longer observation might be needed.
- Results: Scan findings are delivered immediately. Biopsy results (pathology) are received within about 10-14 days.
Are there risks or side effects?
Risks
Diagnostic EUS is very safe. When a biopsy (FNA) is performed, risks are slightly higher but still low:
- Bleeding/Infection: Rare, usually treated with antibiotics or local cauterization.
- Pancreatitis: Rare risk following pancreatic biopsy.
Information for patients from abroad (medical tourism)
The unit is equipped to receive international patients and collaborates with agents for a full logistical envelope.
Direct inquiries are also welcomed for rapid and efficient coordination.
We provide urgent EUS service for international patients requiring rapid investigation of findings in the pancreas or bile ducts, including coordination of rapid pathology (Fast-Track) in oncological cases.
For your convenience, Dr. Vosko is fluent in Hebrew, English, and Russian.
Will my throat hurt?
Because the device is slightly thicker than a standard gastroscope (due to the transducer), mild throat pain may occur for one or two days. Sucking on lozenges or eating cold ice cream can greatly help relieve the sensation.
Is there any radiation in the examination?
No. EUS uses sound waves (ultrasound), which are completely safe and do not involve ionizing radiation. This is a significant advantage over CT, especially for repeated follow-up examinations.
Will I receive results immediately?
You will receive the visual findings (the size and location of the mass) immediately. If a biopsy was taken, the final answer from the laboratory takes about two weeks. In certain cases, a pathologist is present in the examination room (ROSE) and provides a preliminary indication, but this depends on availability.
Why not settle for CT or MRI?
EUS provides much higher resolution than CT for small lesions (less than 2 cm) and for the intestinal wall. In addition, it is the only method that allows for taking a physical sample (biopsy) from the pancreas without open abdominal surgery.
Does the biopsy needle (FNA) cause pain?
No. The puncture is performed inside the body, in areas without pain nerves (such as the stomach wall or the pancreas). You will not feel the puncture itself, only at most mild pressure.
EUS (endoscopic ultrasonography) combines an endoscope with an ultrasound transducer to provide a precise image of the layers of the gastrointestinal wall, the biliary system, pancreas, bile ducts and pancreas, as well as the stomach lining, duodenum, and esophagus.
This test is used for diagnosing tumors, gallstones, pancreatic cysts, and bile duct diseases, and enables accurate fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies under direct guidance.
This technique provides high-quality imaging and enables minimally invasive treatment.
A biopsy is a medical procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from the body for microscopic examination in a laboratory.
The purpose of the test is to identify cellular changes, determine whether the process is inflammatory, infectious, or tumorous, and to help the physician choose the most appropriate treatment. The sample can be taken from various locations in the body – for example, from the stomach during gastroscopy, from the skin, from the liver, or from other areas – depending on the clinical suspicion.
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia or as part of an endoscopic examination, and it is considered safe and simple.
Obtaining samples from suspicious tissue in the digestive tract and adjacent organs using an endoscopic technique guided by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).
This method provides access to multiple organs in the body, allowing for assessment of malignant disease spread in order to plan surgeries and treatment approaches.
