Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Bleeding can arise anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract. Causes include ulcers, inflammation, vascular lesions, hemorrhoids, polyps, tumors and esophageal or gastric varices.

Why is it important? Dizziness, weakness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stool or substantial bleeding are warning signs that require immediate medical assessment.

Diagnosis and treatment Evaluation includes stabilization, blood tests and, when indicated, upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, CT or other tests. Endoscopy can also control bleeding with injection, thermal therapy, clips, banding or other techniques.
